This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The middle school where I work is an Arts and Science Magnet School that houses a Dance Department comprised of approximately 200 dance students. We offer 3 levels of dance Dance I, Dance II and Dance III with an Ensemble (Community Performance Group) and two Young Men's Classes (specifically designed for male athletes in dance). I teach the upper level classmen and advanced technical classes. Our program has been around for 31 years. The school is comprised of 83% minority students and 70% of Mann students on Free and Reduced Lunch.
My Project
As part of our school's literacy initiative, I am requesting a class set of books for my female dance students and another set for my male dance students. They each will read the books and participate in lessons for comprehension. All students will also be responsible to complete a book project (create a dance about a memorable moment of the book, a board game, writing an extra chapter for the book, etc.). In addition to the books, we are in need of supplemental equipment for our students to improve their skill level in dance and supportive materials for the travel dance ensemble.
