Leaping Into Literacy

My students need a Mail Center, and Literacy Center resources including desk top dry erase easels and sound boxes, to help them begin the school year with the materials they need to become good readers.

My Students

Students who develop strong phonics skills become good readers and "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one." This quote from GRR Martin sums up my philosophy of reading instruction. Reading opens up a world of possibilities.

My kindergarten students attend an inner-city neighborhood school built over 100 years ago.

They all receive free breakfast and lunch and for many of them, school is the only place where they hear English spoken. This does not prevent them from being eager learners, ready to explore the world around them. They are just beginning to learn how to read and I want to inspire them not only to be good readers but to develop a love of reading that will last a lifetime.

My Project

Every morning, we have Literacy Centers. The students really look forward to our Center time. I have designed and developed a wide variety of activities to let the children explore, practice, and master every aspect of reading instruction. Many of our centers revolve around phonics skills and this is where the resources I'm requesting fit in. Students will use the dry erase and magnetic stands to practice letter sounds, sight words, and writing sentences. They will use the letter sound boxes and mats to learn to sound out words, blend sounds to make new words, and count out sounds and syllables. The mail center will enable them to have all their resources in one neat, organized location for daily use.

Your contribution to this project will enable my students to have much needed resources to help them build those phonics skills that are so important to beginning readers.

By engaging them in hands-on phonics instruction, they will acquire these skills more quickly. Thank you in advance for reading my project and helping my young readers.
