My students need materials focusing on long vowels, including puzzles and match ups, dominoes, a Roll and Read game, and a short and long vowel sorting board.
My awesome first grade students have mastered their short vowels and are ready to move on! Unfortunately, as a former kindergarten teacher, I have no materials for long vowels!
My students are first graders in a high poverty elementary school in Delaware.
I teach reading and writing to 47 students with a wide range of abilities, including special education students, in our school's Spanish immersion program. I taught these students in kindergarten last year, and I am so excited to teach them again in first grade! My students come to school every day ready to learn. They love to listen to stories I read aloud. Many of my students do not have books to read at home, so I use every opportunity I can to read to them at school.
My Project
First graders have mastered short vowel sounds and are ready to work on learning long vowels. After teaching kindergarten for many years, I have never taught long vowels to students, and therefore, I don't have any materials! I am seeking a variety of engaging, hands-on games and activities that my students can use during their independent centers. My students can work with partners to play the Roll and Read game as well as build words with dominoes. The puzzles and match-ups provide students with immediate feedback so students know whether their answer is correct or not. Students will also enjoy sorting short and long vowel sounds with the sorting board and pictures.
These games and activities will provide my students with a variety of engaging opportunities to read, write, and master their long vowel sounds by interacting with their peers during their independent center time.
