Help me give my students copies of the LeapFrog Word Caper DVD to help prepare them for kindergarten, and the Bucketfiller Book to remind them to always fill buckets!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My Pre-Kindergarten students are enthusiastic "college bound" learners! They are intelligent, young students, but the reality is that their socioeconomic statuses and zip codes put them at an academic disadvantage, as compared to their more affluent peers. They are in dire need of having access to quality materials, both inside and outside of the classroom. However, providing them with the supplies necessary to learn in this context is a struggle due to severe budget cuts.
For most of my students, this is their first experience in a structured learning environment.
I want to be able to make their first learning experience hands-on and fun!
My Project
Learning letter names and sounds is the basis for learning how to read and write. Some students greatly struggle with acquiring this foundational skill, making literacy learning challenging and difficult. To help overcome this literacy barrier, I implement Leap Frog DVDs in my classroom, the Letter Factory and the Talking Words Factory. My students absolutely love these DVDs and I have seen tremendous improvement with their letter and letter sound skills, as well as their ability to build and decode words! I want to provide my students with the opportunity to continue building their literacy awareness skills over the summer by giving them each a copy of the next Leap Frog DVD, Word Caper. This DVD is a follow-up to the Talking Words Factory, reviewing previously taught skills from Pre-K and introducing new skills that they will be learning in Kindergarten. This DVD will be a gift to each of them at the end of this school year.
I want to make sure that my students have the best chance for academic success and provide them with resources that make learning fun and help to close the achievement gap.
