Have you ever opened a book that looks interesting, but is in a language that you do not know? What if ALL your books were in that language and you had to learn from them all day? Maybe you can sound out some of the words, but would your pronunciation be correct? Who would correct you?
My students are English Language Learners who also face socioeconomic disadvantages, not only at home and in their community, but also in school.
Most of my students were born in the USA, but many of them are new comers to the country, with not a word of English. Some of my students have learning disabilities with IEP's and benefit from different teaching modalities. Some also have to see the psychologist at least once a week for anger management issues and also attend a program to learn to express themselves in a non-violent, non-bully manner and care for others. We are a class of 31 fourth grade students with many limitations, like language barriers, a crowded bungalow, lack of technology equipment, and even family issues to name a few. Even though, my students are in fourth grade, they require the very basics since some of them have only been in the country a few months. My students are vulnerable of being bullied or worse, becoming bullies themselves to make themselves feel better.
My students need the LeapFrog Tag Reading System and LeapFrog Reading Book Sets to assist them with their reading fluency and accuracy during independent work time. This will allow for me to more effectively differentiate instruction and meet with small groups according to their instructional level and needs. The LeapFrog Tag Readers are very popular for English speaking children learning to read. It is a pen that sounds out words as you touch the text. I plan to have the Tag Readers at a center where my students can work independently listening to letter sounds, correct pronunciation of words, as well as reinforcing key skills provided by the Readers. The Readers are available in different reading levels which will allow each child to practice phonemic awareness at their own level and not feel intimidated. This multisensory reading experience will allow them to learn independently and in a fun way.
Your donations will give my students a resource that will assist them with correct pronunciation of English words, as well as the love for reading, increased self-esteem and sense of belonging to our country.
They will become successful and confident English readers, thanks to you! This is a difference that will last a lifetime.Read More
