Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Pencil box-check. Ticonderoga jumbo pencils-check. Hugs from their teacher-check. Collaborative, success-driven culture-check. It seems like most of the critical components of a kindergarten classroom are in place. With tears in their eyes, they ask, "What are these squiggly black marks on this page?"
My students are marvels--inquisitive, caring, determined, yet very low performing.
Our classroom culture is based on the “Green Gator” community, peace, friendship, and the highest level of achievement. This year, 20 students have been placed in my charge at a low income, 97% Hispanic school. It is truly remarkable to see the impact my rigorous approach has upon helping these children to overcome the vast challenges associated with growing up in poverty, where access to books and academic resources are limited. For example, statistics demonstrate that, by age 3, children from low-income households have heard approximately 13 million words spoken, while their more affluent peers have heard 45 million words. Consequently, many low-income children enter school at a great disadvantage, having lacked this exposure to a variety of rich vocabulary words, and they often experience difficulties with reading comprehension and overall academic performance.
My Project
Reading. It isn't just about the ability to read words, complete assignments, and pass standardized tests. The end result of not being able to read is limited literacy skills that handicap the student's educational potential. To be able to read, the child must look at those black squiggly marks on a page and translate this written code into our language. By providing interactive, entertaining, leap frog tag pens and stories, students can instantly love reading. Students can read along while the pens decipher each word using sound effects, amusing phrases, and other fun activities related to the book. There are special symbols placed throughout the pages that cause the reader to read the entire page, play a game, prompt them to answer "yes" or "no" questions, repeat a phrase, or simply stop them from speaking. Leap frog tag encourages independent reading with books they love, developing even difficult learners. Those squiggly lines will finally come to life!
As Mister Rogers says, “Any real work has its tough times, and any real love has its trials.
I wish you the kind of life’s work in which you can see the greatest part of who you are.” I am a reader--it's the best part of who I am and by teaching a kindergartener to read, everyday I am immersed so much that time evaporates and my commitment to literacy grows stronger. It is truly awe-inspiring to watch five-year-olds read and continue to develop with your generous sponsorship.
