This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
" Today a reader, tomorrow a leader," Margaret Fuller said and I truly believe in this quote. Reading not only fosters a child's imagination but it creates a path for success in their lives. The ability to read is the most important skill for a child to have.
My second grade class is located in Florida.
My school is in a high poverty area where most of the students are on free or reduced lunch. The school is a small elementary school which houses Pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Many of my students come from single parent homes where they can barely afford the basic necessities in life that we all take for granted. I constantly hear from my students that they do not have books in their homes. I have seventeen students in my classroom and many of them are reading at a low level. They are sweet kids that really appreciate the things that they are given. I have spent much of my own money to create an environment for them that fosters creativity, learning and makes them feel secure and safe and they really treasure their classroom. Since our school is limited in resources their are many items that my classroom and students need which would help them to succeed.
My Project
The items that I am asking for will be used to create a Leap Frog Center where the students can sit in order to improve their reading skills. The TAG Reading System is an electronic item that reads books to them, asks them questions and is interactive with their responses. The students can sit at the center and work on their own with an item that will correct wrong responses and reward correct ones while I will have the ability to work with students one on one. The center will give me the ability to focus on students while the others continue to learn and work on their skills.
Although my school is small, we made great strides in improving the learning of our students last year.
This project and these items will give me the ability to reach even more students and prepare them for success in their school career as well as their lives.
