I teach a gifted first-grade class in Brooklyn. My school is an Early Elementary School consisting of one pre-kindergarten, six kindergartens, and seven first-grade classes. More than 70 percent of our children receive free lunch. Since we are a smaller school, we have a smaller budget; hence we have very little money for classroom extras.
As a first-grade teacher, one of my main goals is to teach my students to be proficient readers. First grade is an important year in students' lives because it is when they learn different strategies to be successful readers. They take the skills that they have mastered in the first grade and use them the rest of their educational careers and throughout their lives. If students do not become successful readers in the first grade, they do not have a strong foundation to support them in future educational endeavors. First grade is when children acquire most of the skills needed for future success.
Our class received two Leapfrog Learning computerized “notebooks”. These notebooks read the students stories, introduce vocabulary, play games with the story and aid in reading comprehension. My class loves to take turns using them. The only problem is that we only have two stories to use on these notebooks and I fear that my class will become less interested in using them as the stories become familiar.
I am asking you to please donate a LeapFrog Learning Library to help keep my students motivated in reading. I believe that more books will help my wonderful first graders to become better readers.
Thank you so much for your generosity and consideration.
