I am a Middle School Science teacher in a high needs NYC area. I service English Language Learners within the seventh grade. We are in need of a document camera for our science classroom.
My students have to overcome many language barriers, learn the English language and required school concepts with little or no help from their parents.
Their parents are unable to help them in the educational area due to lack of knowledge and understanding of the English language, as well as knowledge of these concepts. My students work hard and often support their mothers and fathers by running household errands and watching younger siblings. Unfortunately, another aspect my students share is that the majority (+65%) of the families in my school are struggling financially.
My Project
In order to get my high needs middle school students prepared for the new NYS exam, I am requesting an up-to-date technological resource, a classroom document camera. My students will use the document camera every day to showcase Science tasks, whether in-progress or finished as well as content specimens for each unit. They can use the document camera in a variety of ways including justifying their own work, evaluating & discussing the work of their peers, as well as analyze any errors to improve their own or their classmates' understanding.
The work can then be viewed by the creator, teachers, parents, and the school community so that we can all be partners in encouraging and promoting their hard work and achievements!
I believe student academic achievement & confidence will soar when given access to this technology resource. This tool can help them develop a deeper understanding of Science concepts & skills and practice using the academic language necessary to develop career & college-ready mindsets. According to www.ed.gov, "Only 16 percent of American high school seniors are proficient in mathematics & interested in a STEM career." With the resources provided by this project, my students will be put on a more successful path. This can only happen with your aid. Please help us, every little bit helps!
