I need a collection of high-quality resources to continue to do my best teaching for my students. Approaching science from an "Argument-Driven" approach engages curiousity and wonder that tradtional approaches do not.
I work in an amazing Title I school. Most of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and my students are dealing with trauma. We know that when students don't have their basic needs met, learning gets placed on the back burner.
So much research exists that can help teachers like me do a better job working with students experiencing trauma.
I want to keep learning so I can do better for my students and share what I have learned with my colleagues.
My commitment to continued learning is valuable to my students. Their reactions when I tell them that I use my personal time to read, attend conferences, and take classes to learn how to improve are so moving and encouraging. Showing students that I am constantly learning helps them to see that you can always learn more.
My Project
When people ask me about what I teach, I know that the answer they intend to get will be a grade level, content area, or maybe some combination of both. The real answer is that I teach developing human beings.
Yes, "Chemistry" appears by my name on their transcripts, but while we are learning science, we are also learning how to navigate life's challenges.
If you look at the list of books I've chosen, I am diving into content and pedagogy that will enable students to connect with that content. The subject matter of my requested books includes social and cultural issues that can dominate classroom interactions if we as teachers don't learn how to navigate them constructively.
My learning how to make my classrom a welcoming place for students no matter what their home lives are like, no matter what their past experiences are is my number one priority this year. Trauma-sensitive approaches, mindfulness, and inquiry-driven approaches to science will help me achieve that goal. I can't wait to keep learning!
