Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you believe in supporting the concept of student leadership? The purpose of the Academic Program of Excellence (APEX) is to promote a college-going atmosphere, encourage academic success, and support student leadership. We are in need of copies of the Student Leadership Challenge book. My students need 15 copies of the textbook Student Leadership Challenge and a related poster set to engage in student-led discussions about leadership, leadership qualities, and empowerment.
Our high school has created a new program called the Academic Program of Excellence (APEX).
This new and exciting program will begin its inaugural year during the 2015-2016 academic school year with fifty 9th and 10th grade students, and it will expand over time. APEX is a program with the goal of preparing my high school’s high achieving students (those with a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.6) for admittance to the most competitive colleges and universities in the country.
My Project
As you know, there have been many significant budget cuts over the past few years to our educational system. More importantly, my high school is located in an area considered to be of low socioeconomic status, and nearly 80% of our students qualify for the Federal Free & Reduced Lunch Program. As a result, our school will not be able to fully sponsor APEX with all of the activities that we would like to accomplish with our students.
College tour field trips are expensive since we must rent buses and hire substitute teachers. The leadership textbooks we use costs $30 each, and trips to museums or performing art theaters can be costly as well. This is where donors like you come in. My goal is to utilize the Student Leadership Challenge textbooks to engage students in authentic discussions about leadership.
With your assistance, we can help these students in a variety of ways by providing them the opportunity to learn more about colleges and scholarships, enriching their minds through cultural events, and by developing their leadership skills, which are vital skills that employers desire in the 21st century.
