Leadership is a program at South San Francisco High School that attracts a diverse group of students. From Filipinos to Latinos and Chinese to Arabs, the South San Francisco H.S. Leadership/ASB class has tremendous diversity in ethnicity and ideas. For that reason, we have had to learn to work together through issues that other people in the United States can avoid. Dealing with race, politics, and political agendas we have openly talked about issues that range from a student's struggle escaping from the war in Lebanon over the summer to issues that affect their self-esteem and daily happiness. While, have been able to get to know one another through these regular conversations we lack a common theme to our discussion. As this is my first year as Student Activities Director and ASB director, I was left with a program that had little organization and much to change. Though I have better organized and corrected some of these problems to help these students. One area that could be improved in my classroom is the use of a common text, to help us bridge gaps and to find a means of speaking to each other about our differences through an organized curriculum. The classroom has the potential to change lives should the students be guided in Leadership theory, rather than in anecdotes we can share with each other. Each of these topics would be a leaping point for our personal stories, rather than the opposite which I am currently employing. It is for that reason, that I am requesting the purchase of at least 30 of a common text for the classroom. As the class is average size 30 students will be influenced by the textbook range from Honors to General students. Furthermore, these textbooks will be an integral part of the curriculum to come. Each student will have access to the materials in and out of the classroom and it will help them to plan, organize and coordinate events at the school. By promoting teamwork and unity in the students now, they will be well prepared to take a more active role in their community and foster a greater society. Thank you in advance for your support!
