My students need support in their pursuit of an education beyond their classroom. We're hoping to travel to Washington, DC for our spring trip as a culminating activity for our study of leaders in social change.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our 5th-grade students attend a Title 1 school in North Carolina. A significant portion of students receives free or reduced-priced breakfast and lunch. Despite their daily challenges, our students are eager to learn.
We try to meet this enthusiasm with daily opportunities to make their learning relevant and engaging.
Many of our students have limited experience outside of their daily routine of school and home. We would like the chance to expose them to the rich culture and valuable education our nation's capital can provide only a short drive away.
My Project
Our 5th graders will be traveling to Washington, DC to see for themselves the rich history of leaders in our country and how they have enacted social change. They will begin with a visit to the Museum of African American History and Culture.
Famous figures and events that we have only had the chance to talk and read about will be at our fingertips as we visit the Smithsonian Museums.
They will also get the chance to explore famous American landmarks such as the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Wall, Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and World War II Memorial. Students will be experiencing the history of our nation for themselves, instead of merely reading about these things in a book.
