Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Did you ever experience being able to choose what book YOU want to read for school? It is an opportunity not a lot of students are able to have. The students in my classroom are encouraged to take ownership for their learning.
My students' eyes light up when I tell them they have the opportunity to make their own choices in their learning; they are empowered and excited to begin.
As a reading teacher on the Southside of Chicago I try to use books as a window to show the students the world around them.
Many of them have never left the city, some only go outside their neighborhood on field trips. As much as I would love to take them on experiences around the world, giving them books, and the power to choose what type of book, expands their world similarly.
My Project
Donations will go to purchasing chapter books to be used for literature circles. Literature circles are a chance for students to learn literary elements through a variety of texts and small group discussions. Students often don't have a chance to choose how they learn. This can lead to uninterested and disengaged students.
By donating to this project, you will be empowering students to have choice in the classroom: they will get to select what book interests them the most for the literature circles.
This will lead to higher student engagement and excitement for learning. The books I have selected reflect and add on to our curriculum in new and exciting ways. I can't wait to see their faces when they realize they get to select how they will be learning this year!
