Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every day, regardless of the challenges in their lives, my students work relentlessly hard to grow academically, social-emotionally, and become justice-oriented individuals. My students use their knowledge and skills to eliminate the various systems of oppression that keep them and their families from achieving their full potential.
My class is a group of passionate, funny, freedom-fighting and inquisitive kids who want to use their education to improve their lives and community.
Our students' daily lives are full of adversity. At our school, one hundred percent of students qualify and receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students face many challenges at home; however, this does not get in the way of their success. Instead, they remain perseverant and continue to strive for and achieve excellence.
My Project
Our classroom desperately needs new books. I want to make sure that my students have access to the type of books that they find exciting and hard to put down. I spent a considerable amount of time selecting the books for this project. Many of the books aren't just third-grade classics but also contain characters that look like my students. It is important to me that the books my students have access to expose them to different voices/life perspectives. I also made sure to select books that my students can read. For that reason, I carefully picked books that matched my students AR Levels.
I want my students to be readers for life.
I firmly believe that the right book can convert a non-reader into a full-blown reading enthusiast. That's exactly what Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree did for me.
All my students, regardless of their reading level, are interested in many types of literature. All my students can be amazing readers. Over the last couple of years, I have learned that when a student transitions from learning to read to reading to learn they start caring a lot more about the content of the literature in front of them. Many of my third-graders will not touch books that have pictures of adorable puppies or fuzzy teddy bears. Instead, they will read anything that has pictures of their favorite football player or racing car.
Lastly, we will also be using many of these books for our read-aloud and small group intervention sessions.
