My students need 50 books to improve literacy and writing skills including mentor texts such as Caves, Henry's Freedom Box, and Thank You, Mr. Faulker.
Leaders are readers, no doubt about that! Reading and learning really are the ticket to getting around the globe.
Dr. Suess said it perfectly: "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."
My classroom is part of a small, rural school district located on the banks of the Mississippi River.
I currently teach 23 wonderful students. They are both enthusiastic and excited about learning. They are curious about the world around them and ask many questions about what they are learning.
My Project
The use of mentor texts during read-alouds provides outstanding models for fluency. Mentor texts can help build and expand students' oral language, promote active listening, encourage deeper thinking, and support learning about the world around us. Mentor texts also help students envision possibilities for their own writing and provide models for what good writing should look like.
Students will have many opportunities to apply what they have learned during the read-alouds and mini lessons to what they are currently working on at their independent reading and writing levels.
Having these mentor texts available in my classroom will give me many great tools to explicitly teach comprehension and writing strategies.
Students need many opportunities to practice fluency, comprehension, and writing skills. Providing the time needed to improve these skills will not only currently help my students, but it will also give them a foundation to continue to strive and excel with these life-long learning skills.
