I have the privilege to teach fourth grade at a diverse public school. I teach at a Title I school in Nevada in which a high percentage of my students come from bilingual homes and receive free or reduced-price lunch. My school serves a low-income population in which most students are English Language Learners. A portion of these students only receives exposure to English in school. They work with great enthusiasm and effort to improve their English and progress toward a mastery of the language.
My students face tough obstacles in their lives but arrive at school smiling and ready to learn.
They love their teachers. Our school truly is a community and a family. We each do our part as a student and teacher. We work side by side with one mission in mind: our students’ success.
My Project
Students will learn from a variety of books and learn to love to read! These books will all line up with a program we will be implementing school wide for students to become leaders in the classroom and around the school.
Authors have written books about lovable characters and important themes relevant to my students.
My scholars will have an opportunity to read and learn from different authors necessary to build critical thinking skills. By studying a particular author, my students will also learn how life experiences contribute to an authors craft. I intend to use these books as mentor texts to teach multiple comprehension strategies during read alouds. It would bring me great joy to overhear my students talk about common topics at lunch, recess, etc. because of the discussions we share as a class.
These books are part of the 7 Habits that include: paradigms, circle of influence and Habit 1: Be Proactive.
I will be adding additional books that are need for this program in other projects.
