My Students

Our students are amazing! Many were born into poverty, are immigrants or refugees from other countries, or are currently experiencing homelessness. Despite difficulties and hardships in their early and current lives, they come to school with smiles, eager, ready, and willing to learn and grow as part of our kindergarten community.

We often spend our own money on necessities for students like clothing, sneakers, snacks, and books.

This doesn't allow us to purchase supplemental materials for the classroom that the district doesn't provide but which can enhance the kindergartners' learning and understanding immensely.

My Project

Because there are high levels of lead and copper in the classroom drinking water, and no current time frame of when this problem will be solved, I am asking for bottled water for our students to drink. We currently have a water cooler placed upstairs for the three kindergarten classes located on that floor to use and a water cooler placed downstairs for the kindergarten and preschool classrooms use on that level. With the 2019-2020 school year beginning, Kindergarteners need 4-gallon jugs of water for the water coolers.

When you send your child to school, you assume they have safe drinking water available, but this is not always the case.

Many of my students do not have the means to bring bottled water from home, and I can not allow them to drink the water in my classroom due to high, unsafe levels of lead and copper in the water. It is hard to look at a thirsty student and say no when they ask to use the bubbler or want a small drink of water with their daily fruit or vegetable snack. Bottled water available for student use in the kindergarten classroom areas would solve this problem.
