Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a specialized open admissions high school in New York City. The vast majority of my students aspire to become lawyers in the public sector in order to serve their urban community. These ninth graders are highly intelligent, ambitious and energetic. This semester, they have expressed interest in approaching academia from a multimodal approach in additional to "schooling as usual." They seek to create PowerPoint presentations to sharpen their oral skills. They are also bent on creating videos, websites, Podcasts and blogs to make themselves more marketable for colleges and employers.
Most students in my classroom struggle to show up with a notebook, binder and pencil. Most do not have Internet access at home and they do not own copies of books. Our classroom has become more than a center for learning, but THE center for learning. I wish to empower students by giving them the opportunity to share their work with our learning community. With a projector, students can be proud of what they created while also enriching the other students. It is important for us as teachers to give the students the resources that they need. Students should not be burdened by what they do not have. They should only be tasked with the learning that all other more privileged students are.
By providing these students with the technology that they need, they will be better prepared for college. They MUST learn how to give presentations in order to be successful in their upper high school years and in college. Since these students already have the drive to attend college and after that law school, we have a unique opportunity to employ that motivation by assisting students and providing the resources that they need to succeed to get into a top undergraduate and graduate institution.
Your help will ensure that my students will not fall through the cracks. It would be a shame to waste such intellectual capability and willingness to produce work that reflects technology. By just making a small donation to this project, you can help my students gain access to the modern world and the resources that they deserve.
