Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a diverse learner-instructor, I have a unique group of students with varied learning types, abilities, disabilities, reading levels, and personalities. Every day they make me laugh and because of them, I want to be a better teacher.
I love their determination and perseverance when a concept or task is challenging.
For example, I have an autistic student who struggles with math. However, my student comes every single morning for tutoring and extra support. During that time we not only work on math, we work on his social-emotional development as well.
I love my students' interest in reading, even though they may not be reading at grade level and reading is difficult for many of them. This current school year, I found a bunch of books that are high interest for my 8th-grade student who is reading at a kindergarten reading level. He read all 10 of them in 2 weeks. It was amazing!
I love our off task conversations. I love knowing about their lives in an urban setting, their immigrant experiences, their music, their movies, their interests. I love to bring what is relevant into our classroom!
My Project
Most of my middle school diverse learners are reading below a 3rd grade reading level which makes it challenging to find engaging books. Also, many of my diverse learners are coming to terms with their sexuality and I want to give my students access to texts that provide both mirrors and windows into the LBGTQ+ community. This collection of books is written at a lower reading level, making them accessible to my students, and they feature characters and situations that embrace and support the LGBTQ+ community. My goal is for my students to be able to read books at their maturity level, even if their reading level is much lower. I also think these books will spark conversation around diversity and inclusiveness, and will help my students develop empathy for those that are different.
