Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you've gone to any store lately you may have seen the "Back to School" signs and displays. Each one is full of students with their supply lists excitedly picking folders and notebooks of their favorite color and picture.
My students attend school in a low income neighborhood where they do not have access to as many educational resources and materials as their neighboring Manhattan schools.
99% of our families are entitled to receive free and reduced price lunches due to their level of income. As a result of income, back to school shopping isn't quite the same for them, as students, and us, as teachers. Despite these obstacles standing in the way of their success, our students continuously strive to be better students and spend a great portion of their lives attending school, after-school, and Saturday school.
My Project
Because we receive a lack of supplies, often the small amounts of items that we do have become community supplies shared with our entire class. From crayons to markers to pencils and scissors, our students become very good at working collaboratively.
With these tabletop caddies, we will foster collaborative work while making the most efficient use out of our community supplies.
Students will have access to supplies right at the fingertips. These supplies will be organized for easy use in each compartment. Additionally, the color of the caddy is often adopted by each table and, thus, it assists in classroom management often asking students to line up by color or work together by color.
