Help me give my students a new Art Center for Four that has a large easel for expressing their creative selves, expanding artistic opportunities for four or more students to work together cooperatively, and easily store supplies to feed their imaginations!
My students are enthusiastic, eager learners! They are five and six year olds who are just starting their school experience and building a foundation that will carry them throughout their educational careers. They love to discover, explore and grow through play and fun learning activities that engage their hands on nature. Kindergarten is an exciting time for them and my role is to foster the spark for their school success!
Albert Einstein once said, "Play is the highest form of research." We want to foster this playful learning through child-directed and process-oriented projects that allow them a feeling of independence and choice to develop into authentic young learners.
My Project
My students enjoy spending as much time as they can creating projects in our art center during their free choice learning time. However, our current, well loved center has been used for 20+ years and is in disrepair so that only one side can still be used limiting the number of students that can participate in art activities. By providing this new Art Center for Four center for students, we not only can expand the number of young artists at the same time, but also vary the materials and scope of projects created because of the additional storage space provided by the easel and attached shelving.
When young children have the opportunity to express themselves through art they become even more well rounded learners!
At this center they will be able to utilize different mediums, and connect their math and literacy learning with art integration. As early childhood process art expert Maryann Kohl states, "Art encourages children to think, developing skills and confidence as they go. It is a place for children to learn to trust their ideas, themselves, and to explore what is possible." We wish to create this "place to explore" in our classroom through this project!
