Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am teacher in a DC public school. Our school offers a dual immersion Spanish-English bilingual program. This means that at least 50 percent of our students are native Spanish speakers, many of whom are limited English proficient. The background of all of our students, in terms of readiness, varies widely.
There is no better way to prepare our youngsters for their future than to build a strong academic foundation from the start. One of the most fundamental building blocks is the development and nurturing of early reading skills. These skills begin with shared reading, expand into phonics, and then launch them with guided reading - small group and one-on-one reading instruction.
In order to do this well a teacher must meet the individual needs of each student. A teacher needs tools to provide this targeted instruction: leveled books. Our school was recently given funding to purchase a large collection of leveled books to launch our new literacy initiative.
The problem: teachers need a way to keep these books organized (a different title every day for every reading group - that's 8 to 10 different titles/books daily).
The solution: Countertop Guided Reading Centers. Teachers can go check out the leveled books they need for their students from our book room, then bring them back to their classrooms and sort them by reading group using these sectioned tubs.
Help us launch our young readers by providing each classroom at our school with Countertop Guided Reading Centers. Making book and reading group organization easy will allow teachers to focus their efforts on providing students the support they need to become excellent readers.
What makes a donor or donors who support this proposal positively heroic? These resources are high-quality and will last and last, enriching our reading program for many, many years to come.
