Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 9th-grade students attend an urban public school with a diverse student body. Our rigorous IB curriculum and the classroom communities we build together encourage my students to consider multiple perspectives and become responsible global citizens.
They love engaging in inquiry as they develop their communication and critical thinking skills, and are eager to discuss connections between the literature and their society!
Literature is an invaluable tool for exploring human nature and the past and present world around us; furthermore, developing a love for literacy will be integral to my students' future success. The foundation of skills they build this year alongside the lessons they learn about the beauty and power of language will (hopefully) remain with them throughout their academic and professional careers!
My Project
Adding these sets of Young Adult Literature titles to my classroom library will allow my students to choose which book they would like to end their freshman year with. These titles are celebrated in the literary world due to their diversity, cultural relevancy, and engaging themes. Students will be able to explore all of the texts, select the one they are most interested in, and participate in collaborative literature circles using one of the titles included in this project! These engaging books will serve as the primary sources for the literature circles. Students will put their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and inquiry skills to use in order to prepare for and participate in their literature circle activities.
Most importantly, the goal is for my students to experience success and joy in their learning that can also help foster a genuine love of reading!
