Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am constantly surprised at how much talent there is to be found at our elementary school. They sing, they play instruments, they're smart academically, and kindhearted to one another. Many of these students are involved in our Honor Choir (Grades 3-5) and perform for various school events and local businesses and nursing homes in the community.
These kids are driven and motivated to be their best, which inspires me to pour all that I have into their music curriculum.
They are always looking forward to the next big thing in music.
My Project
This past Spring our school was given a generous grant for the purchase of 20 brand new violins for use in the elementary music classroom. My students and I were beyond ecstatic for the possibility of integrating violin studies into the curriculum (currently I teach recorders for 3rd grade, guitars for 4th grade and piano for 5th grade).
I had an opportunity to start my violin instruction in the 4th grade through the public school system, and I want to give back to my students the same opportunities.
The String Builder method book was the exact same method book I learned on and it helped me gain a good musical foundation as I continued on with the instrument into middle and high school. I plan to use this same instruction book with the launch of our beginning strings program this Fall 2018.
When we received the violins they were outfitted with the bare minimum (bow & rosin) but there were no shoulder rests to help them place the violin accurately on their shoulder. Having these shoulder rests will allow the students to play the violin to the best of their abilities.
My Principal and I are excited to be launching this Beginning Strings program. Our students will not only learn how to make beautiful songs on the violin, but they will also learn about responsibility (caring for their instrument) and about working together as a team (ensemble playing). I look forward to seeing how this program might grow into the future with your help and support.
