My students consist of individuals in kindergarten to eighth grade in an elementary school in a very large, low-income, urban school district. Our school is committed to providing students with a nurturing and safe environment in which they will be challenged and will be prepared for the world ahead of them!
Working in an urban school setting, many of my students come from low-income environments with limited access to educational materials and resources.
All of my students on caseload receive speech and language services as a result of a communication disorder that educationally impacts their ability to interact with others in a school setting. They are eager to do their best to perform in the classroom and communicate with both teachers and peers by improving fluency, articulation, language skills, and much more! We celebrate a welcoming and diverse environment in which each student is encouraged to be the best the he/she can be!
My Project
Interactive sequencing and vocabulary match up/bingo activities are so important because as a new speech language pathologist in an urban school district, my access to quality materials is very limited. I want to provide language intervention that is both fun and effective; however, it is extremely difficult to do so when all of the materials I have available to me are very outdated.
My students want to work hard to achieve their goals and objectives; however, motivation and participation can be low without materials that entice them to want to engage in speech-language therapy.
If given new ways to increase language skills in a fun and interesting way, I know that my students (of all ages) would make leaps and bounds in regard to their progress and capabilities. Supplies such as the sequencing cards and vocabulary activities (grammar match ups, vocabulary cards, and vocabulary bingo) allow my students who are beginning to work on more complex goals and objectives a chance to do so in a format that is not simply worksheets! I hope that my students will look forward to coming to speech therapy and to all of the amazing things that I know they will do. Language intervention should be fun!
