My Students
I teach middle school students grades 6th-8th at an Elementary School on the South Side of Chicago. My students are predominantly Latino and 37% of them are English Language Learners. We are located in a very supportive community that wants the best for our kids. I am lucky to work at my school with students that are all around happy to be at school and curious about life.
Whenever I buy a new novel for the class or for our library they are all fighting to be the first to read it.
As English Language Learners they are challenged to keep their native language in order to communicate with their parents and strengthen their English skills in order to be successful in school. Reading is the best way for them to naturally enhance both languages. Unfortunately middle school is the age where they often start to lose interest in reading, but finding new and different novels to read helps me keep their attention.
My Project
Every year the History teacher, Writing teacher, and myself the Reading teacher work together to complete a Civil Rights unit for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. We try to vary the groups that we address in this unit so they not only learn about African American Civil Rights but also Latino.
It is important that the students read novels in which they can identify with the characters in order to make connections as well as expand their knowledge beyond their own personal experience.
This novel, Caminar, portrays the hardships of a teen in Guatemala which is unique to the experiences they have read about in the past.
