Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is in a very rural setting of Texas in a small town. Most students that come to our school are from an economically disadvantaged background. This, however, does not extinguish their curiosity or love of art - just the opposite.
Most students that come into my room have hope in their eyes and want to explore different mediums.
I think that art can be a great escape from any troubles they may be facing. They love creating art in my room and many times are so proud that they give their finished piece to a loved one as a gift.
Our school falls into one of the counties that were affected by Harvey a year ago. While our school was not affected, I know many families still recovering. Any addition to the art room can brighten their days and outlooks!
My Project
This is a VERY last minute project that (fingers crossed) I hope to get funded before we leave for holiday break!!
I was not planning on doing a Christmas or holiday "project," but SO many of my students keep asking me about it!
They want to make ornaments and give them to their loved ones as a sweet memento. I do not have enough funding to fund this project.
I am requesting two different types of blank ornaments. The first is rustic wood ornaments that they will hand paint with acrylic paints. The other type is clear glass ornaments. We will water down acrylic paint (I will combine this with a color theory lesson) and with pippettes (who doesn't love using a pipette?) we will drop the colors INSIDE the ornament and swirl it around.
Our school is from a very poor rural community that was affected by Hurricane Harvey just a little over a year ago. I believe this project would really brighten up their holiday spirits.
