Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the proud librarian of a Title I elementary school in Dallas, Texas. The school has an enrollment of approximately 475 students of which approximately 96% are considered low-socioeconomic status. Many of our students speak more than one language and deserve every opportunity to receive a well-rounded education.
The younger students in grades PK-2nd are excited about coming to the library and are eager for story time.
Many of them like to ask, "Ms. Book Lady or Ms. Library, what are you going to read to us today?" I can't help but smile at their enthusiasm.
My Project
I want to provide the students in the lower grades (PK-2nd) every opportunity to read books that are educational and entertaining. Many of the titles within this project are included in the Texas 2x2 reading list. They have been reviewed and selected by a committee from the Texas Library Association.
The students have enjoyed reading the 2x2 books in the past, and they are always in high demand.
The humor in many of these titles helps the students understand a range of topics covering social-emotional learning, building strong relationships, and learning about the world in which they live. These books will enrich their love of reading and provide them with opportunities to read important, relevant stories with which they can make connections.
