Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at our school come from very diverse socio-economic, ethnic, and learning ability backgrounds. Students at our school come from all over New York City, but predominately from the Upper West Side, which calls to mind a certain level of affluence, but hides the reality that there are a great number of Public Housing developments in the neighborhood as well. Because of this fact, our school is a Title I school, serving some of the most at risk students in the city, while at the same time serving students who come from an upper-middle class setting. The mix is interesting and intentional.
Our students find their way to us because of their belief in a progressive pedagogy that demands students learn by doing, and engage in the creation of "'flex'pertise": the notion that, mastery spread over multiple disciplines allows for a more powerful and engaged mind.
When a child comes to our school they are enveloped in a robust culture that seeks to foster independence and put them into the driver's seat of their own learning. To this end, they experience a rich program of project-based, mastery-assessed,

Whether we are laser cutting cross-sections of early hominid skulls in social studies, precision cutting the ribs and spars of an airplane wing, or custom engraving DIY hardcovers for our favorite class books a Glowforge Plus laser cutter allows for all projects to crash through previous barriers.
Teaching in the 21st century demands granting students access to tools that can make their designs come to life.
For a time, the design (rendered artfully) was the goal, but new frontiers demand a finished and functional prototype. Children are natural problem solvers, and when provided with transformational technology we can witness the smashing of the old boundaries.
