Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are kind, inspiring, creative, positive and kinesthetic learners. These are kids working to overcome some great obstacles,. This is a great group of first grade learners. They have a very contagious attitude towards learning. In many instances, these students do not have educational support at home. Often, education in their home and communities is not seen as high priority. My classroom is their positive experience in their educational journey. Most first graders are kinesthetic learners and need to be moving during learning.
These students have a wide range of learning needs and I have seen an increase in the amount of students who struggle greatly with the ability to focus.
We are a very diverse school with 56.8% of our student body being minority. All of these challenges make learning new concepts difficult for many of my students.
My Project
Students will use the raised containers to plan their mini plot with a team. Each student will choose a type of seed to grow and monitor as they learn about planting dates, temperature, water, sun and basic care of a garden. We will share our harvest together. This will enhance what our science kits offer for our classes.
Gardening is a lifelong skill that provides a healthy harvest both tangibly and emotionally.
This will be a great experience and add great hands-on experience.
Students in first grade need to understand the structure of plants. What better way for them to learn than by growing their own seeds to harvest? We are located in an agricultural community and many of these students have never planted any type of seed.
