"We are College Bound!" after graduating from high school in 2026. I teach first grade in a Dual Language Classroom. My students learn to read and write in their home language (either English or Spanish), math is taught in English, and science, social studies, and health is taught in Spanish
My students come from diverse backgrounds.
Many of my students are first generation immigrants who are learning English as a second language. My students are learning in English and Spanish by integrating reading and writing into other subjects such as math, science, and social studies. They get excited about learning and love collaborating with their bilingual partner throughout our school day. My school is considered a high needs, high impact school with over 90 percent of our students on free or reduced lunch and over 50 percent English Language Learners. We promote college after graduation and each classroom decorates their class with pennants, mascots, etc. from their adopted university/college. My students know "We are the high school class of 2026" and "We are College Bound!"
My Project
My students will collaborate with their bilingual partner when using the requested laptops to create projects and reinforce first grade Common Core Standards in reading and writing by integrating other subjects into literacy. For example, bilingual partners will observe insects then use a word processor to write about their observations. They will also learn how to find pictures of insects to insert into their projects. Furthermore, students will use speaking and listening skills by sharing and working together with the requested technology. They will also learn how to navigate through and use Internet sites that support common core state standards in literacy for first grade students.
Donations to this project will allow my students to develop literacy skills that will support their goal of being biliterate in English and Spanish.
It will also allow my students to learn cooperative, speaking, and listening skills because they will be sharing and using the laptops with a partner. The donations will allow my students to work towards meeting Common Core State Standards for end of first grade and one step closer to our ultimate goal of going to college. "We are College Bound!"
