Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help our emerging bilingual students build learning habits for success through collaboration! My students are lively, intelligent multilinguals who are building up their English academic language and learning to transfer knowledge and skills between languages. Our classroom utilizes collaborative, student-centered structures, which are completely new for some of my students. I want to teach my students how to own their own learning from being able to work collaboratively with any classmate right down to knowing how and where in the room they learn best.
All of my students come from low-income homes and some have not yet experienced success in the school environment.
According to the state of Massachusetts, our school is among the lowest performing 10% in our state. 90.2% of our students qualify as economically disadvantaged. I want my students passionately engaged in the learning process. Acquiring Chromebook's will show my students that we care about the quality of their learning and giving them appropriate tools to successfully engage in the learning process.
My Project
My students need the opportunity to utilize technology within their learning. Chromebooks will provide my students access to literacy apps and websites such as Raz-Kids and Newsela. They will also allow us to conduct research, write and share using online platforms like Google Drive. We can even start a blog! Because my students are learning English as their Second (Or sometimes third!) language, there are additional advantages that technology can provide to them such as being able to listen to audiobooks in English and Spanish and recording themselves speaking in order to practice fluency. Additionally, all of our district and state assessments are conducted online, so my students need to have basic computer skills.
Currently, there are very few opportunities to utilize technology within our classroom and most of my students do not have access to a device with a keyboard at home, which leaves them at a distinct disadvantage.
Many struggle to type even one sentence and to drag and drop boxes (a skill that is required on our district assessments). Daily access to Chromebooks will allow them to build the technology skills they need in order to be successful in school and in life.
