My Classroom is a place for my Special Education students to access technology that they do not have at home. It is a place to catch up on homework, get tutored and to manage the day to day stresses that a middle school student with Special needs encounters.
My classroom is a special needs classroom for students with Mild to moderate disabilities.
These students have significant gaps in their ability and grade level. Many of their families do not have computers to complete the nightly assignments. They come from good families who want their children to do the best they can. I teach middle school students who often do not have the opportunity to go to college and don't always have the support at home to know how to succeed.
My Project
Many of the assignments that teachers give their students are computer based, need to be downloaded and printed. For many of my economically disadvantaged students, the lack of laptops at home creates a barrier to success. They fall behind in their classwork, they are coming to class unprepared, and therefore, are getting further behind in their classes. If I had these six Chromebooks to offer them, they would at least have a fair fighting chance to succeed.
In our current situation, there are four computer labs that my students can use but they are used most of the time for testing and I have to share them with the other 40 teachers on campus.
Without my own set of Chromebooks in my class, my students will miss out on daily interactions and chances to learn and discover. It is impossible to complete some of the projects I used to do without daily use. Without these devices in my classroom, many of my students will not have access to technology.
