My students don't have many options besides athletics and Ag. I am trying to give them other opportunities to see outside our little town. I started a Lego Robotics Club that attends competitions to give my students a chance to get on a college campus and meet students with interests like theirs.
I teach in a school with less than 250 kids from PK-12th grade.
It is a small farming community in West Texas. I have some very bright students that just need opportunities to show what they can do. We are Title 1 school that does the best it can with the technology resources that we have. I teach grades 4th-8th Science and each class has been very excited about the Robotics program. They are even more excited that the competition is being held at the local college.
My Project
Bringing robotics to my school has been a dream of mine since I started teaching 4 years ago. My students love playing with Lego's and I feel that robotics will be just another step in helping them hone their designing, problem solving, and team working skills. The laptops will allow them to do better at the robotics competition in April. When you travel to these competitions you are involved in several rounds. Between these rounds you can tweak your robot if you see that you are having a problem that can be fixed quickly. This will allow them to do better overall and help develop problem solving skills that will help them once they get out into the real world.
I know that the job of every teacher is to try and inspire their students to do the best they possibly can in their life and future.
I feel that bringing robotics to my students can help them develop skills that could lead them to become our future engineers and scientists. Solving problems that we can't even imagine today.
