I am a special education resource teacher. I work with students with autism, developmental delays, and learning disabilities. During the school year I work with these students in a separate classroom in a small group setting. My students often face social and academic challenges in their general education classrooms. Not only do my students come to my room to receive direct and explicit instruction in their unique areas of need, they also use my room as a safe space where they can decompress and learn at their own pace.
Now that the physical building will be closed for the rest of the year, I need a mode of communication that will foster the same learning environment, virtually.
It is difficult to create that virtual environment when many of my students do not have access to technology. While I continue to send home paper/pencil learning packets, they do not take the place of seeing and hearing a child learn.
It is important for my students to receive one on one virtual instruction to help meet their unique needs during this time of remote learning. Many of my students do not have access to devices at home. I have learned that paper and pencil packets can only take teaching and learning so far.
Nothing can take the place of face to face interaction with a child even if it is only virtual for now.
My students can use these devices to participate in Zoom lessons and online curriculum and resources. My students deserve the opportunity to learn virtually!
