As a teacher in a lower income, rural school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite these many challenges, I try to keep things comfortable and provide my students with a creative and a meaningful learning experiences.
Many of my kids are being raised in single parent households, by grandparents, and even aunts/ uncles.
A majority of them receive free or reduced lunch based on their economic status. Some of these issues may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences or luxuries many of us see as "typical".
From the minute my kids walk in the door of our classroom I focus on their potential and growth. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a positive, loving manner, I am hopeful to inspire them to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
The five chrome books will be used every day in our Reading and Social Studies class. These chrome books will be used in research, test taking, problem solving, and enrichment.
Giving low-income students access to technology is an investment in their future and ours.
Many of my students have no internet access at home. Our school is not equipped with a computer lab that allows our class to be successful in our research. Allowing my students to have access to computers in the class enables them to work in groups or individually on a wide range of topics.
We love to read novels together. We enjoy researching the setting, historical events, theories mentioned in the book, and researching the author who wrote the novel. We would love to be able to separate into smaller groups to research and share our information with each other. Peer reading/sharing is a large part of learning how to be a productive citizen in the classroom and the real world.
We would also use our chrome books to research and learn more about our country's history. We make maps of the "important' battles but it is very difficult without computers. We all have to share my one, teacher computer. Learning our country's history is extremely important.
