Laptops and Digital Camera for Budding Journalists (& Cybersecurity Specialists)
My students need two Acer Aspire laptops and one Cannon Powershot Elph digital camera for the school newspaper and for Cyberpatriots (cybersecurity/IT club) competitions.
I teach Writing in a free, Title I, public charter school. Also, I head a student newspaper club and coach a Cyberpatriots (cybersecurity) team. My students mostly come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many do not have computers or Internet at home. I have several girls and minorities on the team. I would like to raise money for at least two 64-bit laptops for my newspaper students to use to layout the school newspaper and one digital camera for them to take photos. Cyberpatriots students could also use the laptops in competition. We cannot use Chromebooks as they cannot run the competition software and do not have enough memory for the newspaper layout program.
My Project
I have two afterschool clubs that require technology that our school doesn't have. Students in my newspaper club need full laptops for photo editing and layout software. They also need a good camera to take photos of school events.
Those in my Cyberpatriot club are not all currently able to compete in cybersecurity competitions because there aren't enough laptops.
The competition only allows up to six students on one laptop. My club recently swelled to more than 25 students. We need two more laptops so all can compete. The competition requires 64-bit laptops or computers to run the Virtual Images used in competition; my students only have access to Chromebooks.
Learning about cybersecurity is an almost guaranteed path to success for our students.
This competition provides scholarships and experience invaluable for our students, many of whom have no family resources to help them go to college. I teach 5th-8th grades. If I start teaching a 5th grader now, they have the opportunity to have earned thousands of dollars in scholarship money from this competition alone by the time they graduate high school. The proper training equipment is a must so that they can be successful on competition day.
