Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Over 68 NYC Department of Education colleagues have succumbed to COVID-19, and the number continues to grow. In my building, over a dozen staff members fell ill, with many reports of their family members or friends losing their battle. What we don't hear is the silent battle our families and students are experiencing. We are aware of some students losing family members, and, more painfully, we lost one of our graduates, a young lady who had the world ahead of her.
Eighty-three percent of our students are disadvantaged; many of my DonorsChoose projects focus on essential needs (food, clothing, school supplies).
COVID-19 hasn't changed these needs; the needs have just become far more dire.
My Project
Access denied. Update required. Access denied. Update required. I've called Apple several times in the hopes of them helping me out, but I always get the same answer: You need a new laptop.
At work, I have access to Apple desktops, so I never really worry when my laptop couldn't access something because I could always use the school's computer lab to fill in the gaps.
Being at home without access to updated technology, I'm stuck in a chasm for an undetermined amount of time with frustrations building around me. This laptop has gotten me by, but when new resources and extensions are suggested by my colleagues, I'm blocked because my laptop can't handle it.
This project will allow me to access all of the recent technologies remote learning has afforded my students and colleagues. I need access also in order to be speaking the same language as them. We all have technology issues, but the updates that my laptop can't handle really put my students at a disadvantage because I don't see what they're seeing in other classes, so I don't know how to help them.
