Hello! I teach English III at Starkville High School in Starkville, MS. Throughout the semester, my students are required to write essays, poetry, and a final research paper. I firmly believe that many students today do not have the necessary skills to express themselves appropriately in writing. We are trying to change that reality. I encounter a problem with every assignment. Many of my students do not have access to a computer, because quite honestly they cannot afford one. Our students struggle for the basic necessities. While we do have computers at school that they have access to, time becomes a factor. Many of my students rush from school to work or other family responsibilities, and they do not have time to use our computers at school. They resort to turning them in hand written at a loss of points. I think this is a tragedy. I want to offer an opportunity. I wish to purchase a classroom laptop for general word processing purposes. I propose to have this laptop available for checkout overnight by my students. To give this opportunity would be a great benefit for my students. This would benefit over 63 students in this semester alone. The future students served and gains are great. Many of my students are very responsible and devoted to their education but are forced to either do without or prioritize due to family obligations. I want desperately to make the path to a quality education easier for those students that have many obstacles already before them. Thank you for your time and consideration.
