Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are predominantly Hispanic and African American. The majority of which come from low-income households and qualify for free or reduced price lunch. In the United States, children in extreme poverty are half as likely to graduate from high school and one-tenth as likely to graduate from college as students from the most affluent communities. By fourth grade, they are 1.5 years behind higher-income peers in reading and math. By eighth grade, they are nearly 3 years behind. Every day, my students and I strive to defy and ultimately change these adverse statistics.
Hurricane Harvey has devastated many of our students and their families, stretching their already limited resources even thinner.
Following the initial days we missed because of inclement weather, we also missed an initial week due to the immense water damage to our building. Yet, despite these obstacles, our students have an unwavering commitment to excellence. We firmly believe that 100% of our students will go on to attend a four year college or university, a goal that we work towards every day.
My Project
I want to start a music club for my students. Many of them have various musical talents, but they lack the space to hone their craft. I want to provide this space for my students. Growing up, music was very therapeutic for me. I know that many of my students can benefit from having a similar type of outlet for themselves.
With this recording equipment, students will be able to hone their sound and strengthen their voice as they learn how to articulate their feelings, emotions, and thoughts as they work together to create beautiful projects.
This outlet is especially needed after the devastating blow that was dealt to my students by Hurricane Harvey. I think my students will become much better writers throughout this process as well.
We will use the Apple MacBook Pro as our main computer to be able to record through. We’ll also use the 3 year Apple Care protection plan offered with it to make sure that we are protected against any type of accidental damage the laptop may encounter. Since we will be using other devices to record and import music, the LENTION USB-C Digital AV Multiport Hub will allow us to transmit the data that we record into the actual MacBook Pro.
