Students spend time in my resource room for specially designed instruction in a small group setting throughout the school day. I serve students in special education kindergarten through first grade with a range of disabilities including developmental delays, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, mild mental disabilities, specific learning disabilities, and sensory processing disorders. Many students also are ELL/ESL with first languages including Spanish and Russian.
Many of my students come from families whose incomes fall below the national poverty line.
Their families struggle to provide basic needs, and purchasing educational materials is not within their budget. For many of these children, school is the first time they have been exposed to reading, math, and writing. My students struggle in areas of basic reading, reading comprehension, math computation and reasoning, and social and adaptive skills.
My Project
My students need a laptop and headphones for our classroom. We have antiquated desktops in our special education classroom. We are, unfortunately, low priority to get new technology as the general education classrooms are first priority. We need to purchase two laptops for the coming school year as we transition away from traditional textbooks and move toward 21st-century learning models.
My students experience challenges with technology, and having a consistent tool that can be used around the building and travel with them will be helpful to learning.
The laptop will allow students access to general education programs, specially designed instruction with online components, text to speech software, testing accessibility, progress monitoring tools, and communication programs.
