Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every morning the principal asks the students, "How did you come to school today?" The students reply "ready to learn!" In Kindergarten, we are learning reading foundational skills to become independent readers. We practice recognizing letters, numbers, and sight words daily. We work hard everyday.
I teach 25 kindergarten students who enjoy learning how to read, write, and do math.
Our wonderful school is located in sunny Southern California. My students range from gifted and talented to below grade level. We are proud to be a Nationally Recognized School of Excellence and have won many prestigious awards. Since we are not a Title One School, funding extra projects is very difficult.
My Project
My Project: I currently only have two computers for my entire class to share. My students ask me daily if they can use the computer to practice their reading and math skills. With so many students, their time is limited. Last year our district purchased a computer program called Lexia Core 5. This awesome program helps children practice early literacy skills in a game like format. The program allows each child to work at their own pace and level which helps differentiate instruction. If I had one more computer, many more students would be able to access this program during our center time. Another reason I would like an additional computer is to practice identifying letters, numbers, and words on the Starfall website. All of the common core standards, including math can be found on this website. The students enjoy the animation, games, and colorful pictures. I like how this program helps them learn letter sounds, letter names, and beginning blends.
An additional computer in my classroom would give more students access to Lexia Core 5 and Starfall programs.
While students are working on the computers, I would be instructing a small reading group. This is my first Donors Choose grant! Thank you for considering our project.
