Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fourth grade teacher at a small, K-8 charter school in the MacArthur Park/Pico-Union neighborhood near downtown Los Angeles. Our school is comprised almost exclusively of Latino students who come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Used to television and video games, today's students are easily engaged by technology. I hope to capitalize on this interest by incorporating PowerPoint and internet presentations into my lessons, particularly for Science and Social Studies. I have numerous ideas for this already. For example, we could explore California history through the California Historical Society's excellent interactive, web-based timeline. I could create a visually rich presentation explaining how the three kinds of rocks (igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary) are formed. United Streaming, a project of Discovery Education, offers a huge library of educational video clips on-line. I could borrow an LCD projector from a middle school teacher, but need a laptop computer to prepare and deliver these presentations. I know that with these tools, I can interest students who might not otherwise be engaged. Furthermore, as all twenty-eight of my students have limited English proficiency, it is helpful for me to present the content in a variety of ways (not just orally and/or written). Most of all, I can show them that learning is fun. My students and I thank you in advance for your generosity to fund my proposal.
