Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember those science fair projects displayed on large poster boards? Lapbooks take this concept and reduces it to a usable book. Lapbooks are hands-on art projects that can be created for any topic in the curriculum. They include drawings, paintings, fact sheets, photographs, trivia, and games.
My students are eager to learn and try hard every day.
Many have a difficult time mastering concepts and need just a little extra support to help cement their learning. These students do not have a wide variety of life experiences and depend on the classroom to supply them with that background knowledge prior to embarking on curriculum standards. Our school is in a high poverty area of the city and many of my students are English language learners. Many of the parents at our school don't speak English and the children are not exposed to fluent English in the home. Our families are struggling to provide the basics for the family and our school tries very hard to supply students with everything they need to be successful. The school supplies free breakfast and lunch, backpacks, school uniforms, shoes, coats, and even food packs for the weekends.
My Project
These projects will spark the creative side in my students! Lapbooks are created by using large file folders as the receptacle to display and hold all types of activities. Each student is allowed to be creative and choose the types of information to include in their books. Many of the choices include drawings, paintings, trivia games, flashcards, fact sheets, memorabilia, flip books, articles, photographs, song lyrics, and any other activity that is relevant to the topic. Lapbooks can be made for math concepts, such as multiplication, or for a novel they have read, or a social studies topic, such as the United States. These books can then be utilized by the student to learn about the topic in several different modalities. They are durable and students can easily refer back to them for clarification at any time. They also inspire pride and creativity in their work. These art projects make learning fun and will help my students have a solid resources to refer to on many concepts.

As they create their book, they will take ownership in learning the concept. They will make learning fun and inspire pride in my students. Lapbooks help students master concepts by exploring it on many different levels.
