The cost of lapboards and dry erase markers for this proposal is $292, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
I was recently watching a documentary on teaching mathematics when I saw a teacher who had a class set of lapboards for his students. It was amazing how quickly the teacher could assess the students when he used these boards.
The benefits of them are immeasurable. They are a time saver. I would not have to send students to the board to do practice problems in math. And, I could have all of the students working on one problem, instead of just four or five at the board. In all of the other subjects, I can constantly be asking oral questions, but the students can quickly write down responses. In this way, even the students who are less likely to respond will get a chance to have a voice. Additionally, I will be able to see if the students are grasping the material that is being presented. During group work, the students can work individually, compare answers quickly, and show me their work without having to leave their seats. Also, they will not have to waste paper practicing problems in class.
I work in an urban setting where all of my students are on free or reduced lunches because of their household income. I currently teach all subjects to fifth graders. This class is very hard working and loves to learn. They are competitive, and want to do their best. But they are also very helpful if someone does not understand. With these boards, they would be able to help themselves and help each other.
This project will cost approximately two hundred dollars. All that is needed are the lapboards and markers. Paper towels can be used to erase the boards, and I can get the cleaner myself. It is not much to pay for if my students are able to use these boards.
