My Students
I teach Juniors and Seniors at a continuation school that serves 6 comprehensive sites. My students have faced challenges that caused them to veer off the road that leads to a diploma. For many of my students, school is their safe haven for the day. They come to me with a chip on their shoulder, an attitude of worthlessness and a desire to be noticed. Every student after being at my school for a short period of time will tell you they feel that the staff cares for them.
Gangs, poverty, and domestic violence are an everyday occurrence that my students must persevere through.
School is their lifeline to a better life and a more secure future. My students deserve the chance to feel successful, to be successful and to develop self-worth. My school gives them this chance.
My Project
The students will be using their knowledge of polyhedra, angles, and scale to create lanterns that will be applied to the light string. The polyhedra will be scale models the students will create by applying tissue paper with ModPodge and using wooden dowels. These light strings will then be auctioned off to raise money for the charity the students choose to support.
This hands-on activity helps the students apply the basic concepts of geometry to a real-world situation.
They must be able to calculate and measure the degrees of the polygons that make up the polyhedra. They must use scale factor to create the polyhedra of the correct size to fit the light string. They must also use teamwork to design the light string and research charities in our community.
The students are excited about this project and cannot wait to begin.
