My students come with a variety of physical, emotional, and intellectual disabilities. I am a Special Day Class, and I have students that have Autism, Downs Syndrome, Intellectual Disabilities, behavior and emotional disabilities, and other factors that make learning more difficult, but not impossible.
Our community is a rural community that is economically lower than many other areas in our state.
Many of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch and backpacks with food to take home for the weekends.
My Project
My students need lots of repetition to learn and acquire knowledge. In order to keep their attention, I must find several ways to present the same subject. By using the magnetic learning letters, we will be able to practice forming letters without having to use paper and pencil. With a variety of tools available to our class, I am able to teach in small groups which is more conducive to learning.
Many of my students struggle with communication, and it is often because they do not have the vocabulary needed to communicate.
The positional words and story sequencing cards will allow them to learn more vocabulary and practice using it in communication during class time and build strength in this area.
I have some beginning readers in my class, and we are trying to master the beginning word sounds. The Pop and Match Beginning Sound game will make this learning fun, and we know that if something is fun, we are going to learn it more quickly.
Handwriting is a challenge, and we spend a lot of time practicing. We often use pencils and marker because pencils have too small of a point. The Reusable Write and Wipe Pockets allow the students to use the large tip erasable markers, plus we save on paper because we slip it in the pocket, and they can write and erase multiple times.
All of these tools are going to allow my SDC students to access the curriculum with a little more ease.
