Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine fleeing your home and family in search of safety and a promise of an education? My students have lived that situation and eagerly come to school every day! I am an English Learner teacher who is able to teach our most vulnerable students and share the love of learning.
My students have experienced trauma in their young lives but are resilient and eager to learn.
Most students have not had prior literacy instruction or experiences that prepare them for the academic demands in school.
I know my students have bright futures ahead of them. My goal is to support their language learning while accessing the same rigorous content as any other student. With your help, we can do this together!
My Project
I teach at a diverse elementary school with a high poverty rate and almost half of the students are English learners. Teachers continually create materials to meet a range of student needs.
My project is to create a literacy center for English learners that will enable teachers and students to easily access high quality materials to support learning.
I have selected storytelling boards that connect to authentic literature. Students will acquire language through retelling and exploring stories. I also requested science models with curricular connections to build background. Many other items use images to provide context during instruction.
This center is for all educators at my school to support learning!
