Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine the desire to speak to others, but you are limited by a lack of vocabulary?
My students are English Language Learners.
They may have recently entered into our country or they live in a home where a language other than English is spoken. Newcomers often lack the very basic English vocabulary required to communicate with others. They have a great desire to learn the language required to socialize, express their feelings, and participate in academic discussions. Learning in school is not enough. These students often go home to a family of non-English speakers and the exposure and practice with English language often slows or stops. Wouldn't it be great if we could provide an English language activity that is fun and engaging for a student to do at home independently?
My Project
My students would benefit greatly from continued practice with English vocabulary. If I could provide my students with this handheld, portable device, they could experience something different at home -on their own. I am requesting a SMART TALK interactive electronic learning aid that introduces and reinforces everyday vocabulary and beyond. This program offers the student the ability to see a photograph, hear the word, repeat the word, use it in context and answer questions relating to that term. SMART TALK is intuitive and easy to use. It teaches 450 general and academic words, as well as models grammar patterns in sentences and questions. This learning resource is an English vocabulary builder, game, and assessment tool all-in-one. They are given visuals for reinforcement. They can choose from a list of hundreds of topics to study. They can learn independently. Plus, the students can take quizzes and get immediate feedback.
I have created every opportunity for reading, writing, listening, and speaking in English in my classroom.
My students are engaged and immersed in language. This is another tool to help my ESL students learn and grow. It will afford them the opportunity to practice English vocabulary at home.
